Thermal Imaging Cameras (TICs) are standard gear on structural search and rescue runs. However, traditional TICs require a firefighter to carry the camera in one hand, forcing them to navigate zero-visibility environments one-handed.
In-mask Heads-Up Displays (HUDs) aim to solve this constraint by putting thermal imaging directly inside the firefighter's SCBA facepiece.
Traditional Handheld TICs
Handheld cameras feature larger screens and higher resolution sensors, making them excellent for detailed assessment (such as spotting hidden hot spots behind drywall or checking structural integrity).
- Pros: High-resolution sensors. Screen can be easily shared with other crew members during search operations.
- Cons: Ties up one hand. Requires the firefighter to look down at the display, breaking spatial awareness.
In-Mask HUDs
Integrated systems (like the 3M Scott Sight) mount a miniature thermal camera to the SCBA facepiece, projecting a simplified thermal display onto a small screen inside the mask. A note on terminology: handheld situational-awareness cameras such as the FLIR K1 are sometimes lumped in with these, but they are not mask-mounted — they remain one-handed units.
- Pros: Hands-free operation. Allows firefighters to maintain a normal crawling posture while scanning the room.
- Cons: Lower resolution due to size limits. The display is visible only to the individual wearing the helmet, complicating team communication.
